South Korean Presidential Office accuses Lee Jae-myung and others of false accusations
On the 7th, the South Korean presidential office announced that it had filed charges against Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, and other related parties for false accusations.
A presidential spokesman said in an official statement on the same day, "On January 3, the Democratic Party's legal committee announced that Jeong Jin-seok, chief of staff to the president, Shin Won-sik,
"National Security Office Director Shin Won-chan, Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs Kim Ju-hyun, Second Deputy Director of the National Security Office In Seong-hwan, and Defense Secretary Choi Byeong-ok have been charged with insurrection," the statement said.
He continued, "However, there is no evidence that the five individuals conspired in advance to declare martial law, nor have they ever reviewed any laws related to martial law."
The spokesman added, "The accused reported false facts to the Public Prosecutor's Office with the aim of receiving criminal punishment, seriously damaging not only the reputation of individuals but also that of the Presidential Office.
"As such, this constitutes a false accusation," the statement added. "The presidential office expresses strong regret over the Democratic Party's spreading of false facts and filing of false accusations."
