Chairman Kwon said that he would discuss the matter with the Constitutional Association of the Republic of Korea Chairman Jeong Dae-cheol, Vice Chairman Yu Jun Sang, and Secretary-General Yeo Sang-kyu at the National Assembly on the same day.
However, he met with senior politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties and responded in the following way to their words that "constitutional reform is urgently needed to resolve the current political issues and reform the power structure of the Republic of Korea."
At the meeting, Chairman Chung said, "The limitations of the so-called '87 System' have become clear, and the negative effects of the imperial presidential system have reached their limit, so we have decided to propose reforms to reform the power structure.
"The current impeachment political situation is the right time for constitutional reform. The best solution to the current difficult situation is constitutional reform. We need to gather the will of the people and thoroughly amend the constitution," Chung said.
"The constitutional amendments must be able to reflect this. We need an organization that can fully gather the opinions of all sectors of society, including not only ordinary citizens but also civic groups and religious groups," he said.
In response, Chairman Kwon expressed sympathy, saying, "It is time to consider the need for a grand social compromise mechanism for reforming the political system."
Chairman Kwon said, “Yesterday, the ruling and opposition parties and the government began working-level discussions on national affairs. This is the first step toward stabilizing national affairs and restoring people’s livelihoods.
"When it comes to the future, there is no ruling party or opposition party. The same goes for reform of the political system," he said. "We need to have a fierce debate about the various political systems that the people want. I will do my best to provide a forum for that debate.
I will do my best," he added.
