On the 20th, President Yoon's legal team said, "The lawyers met with the president on the afternoon of the 20th and met with him until 9:30 to prepare for tomorrow's impeachment trial."
"I plan to appear at the Constitutional Court's impeachment hearing tomorrow at 2 p.m." At around 3 p.m. on the same day, the Public Prosecutor's Office attempted to force President Yoon to appear in court, but President Yoon refused.
The impeachment trial ultimately failed as the defense continued to discuss the matter. The Public Prosecutors' Office said, "Prosecutors and investigators visited the Seoul Detention Center, but due to continued refusal to be investigated, no appearance was made."
"The compulsory appearance was suspended around 9 p.m. in accordance with human rights protection regulations." However, regardless of President Yoon's appearance in court for the impeachment trial, the criminal procedure will not proceed, including a second compulsory appearance.
President Yoon expressed his intention to "appear in person" immediately after the impeachment bill was passed last month. However, he has not appeared in court at any of the four preparatory hearings or hearings held so far.
He did not appear at the first hearing on January 14, citing "concerns for his safety" after the Public Prosecutor's Office attempted to arrest him.
The Constitutional Court is scheduled to hold the third and fourth hearings on the 21st and 23rd, respectively.
On the 23rd (4th session), Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho will be questioned, and on the 24th (5th session), Lee Jin-woo will be questioned.
Capital Defense Commander Lee Jin-woo, Counterintelligence Commander Yeo In-hyeon, and former Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service Hong Jang-won have been confirmed as witnesses. However, National Police Agency Commissioner Cho has refused to appear in court on the 23rd.
It shows intent.
