Japan claims sovereignty over Liancourt Rocks for 12th consecutive year - South Korean report
On the 24th, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said in a diplomatic speech at the regular Diet session that Takeshima (known as Liancourt Rocks in Korea as Dokdo) is "fundamentally an inherent part of Japanese territory, both in light of historical facts and under international law."
"We will respond resolutely based on our position," he said. Following on from former Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa's comments last year, Minister Iwatake also made similar remarks regarding Takeshima.
Every year, the Japanese Foreign Minister repeats his claim that Takeshima is Japanese territory in his foreign policy speeches.
In a diplomatic speech in 2014, former Prime Minister Kishida, while still Foreign Minister, stated that "Takeshima, Shimane Prefecture, is an inherent part of Japanese territory," and this has been the 12th consecutive year that he has made such remarks.
These claims, which deny South Korea's territorial sovereignty, provoke strong opposition from the South Korean government and people every year.
While saying that Takeshima is Japanese territory, Iwasaki also described South Korea as "a partner on issues facing the international community."
"We are closely monitoring the series of developments in South Korea with special and serious interest, but
"The importance of Japan-Korea relations has not changed in the slightest," he said.
