Through this trial program, overseas travelers with respiratory symptoms can request to be tested for animal influenza, human infectious diseases (AI), and COVID-19 at the quarantine station upon entering the country.
In the past, people were tested for Ebola virus, Marburg fever, and Lassa fever at the quarantine stage.
1st class infectious diseases such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, plague, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), animal influenza human infections, and new strains of influenza.
Previously, travellers were only tested and isolated if an epidemiological link to a quarantine infectious disease was confirmed, but from today onwards, travellers with symptoms can voluntarily report and be tested even if there is no epidemiological link.
The test results can be received by mobile phone or email. If the test result is positive, the quarantine station will issue a positive confirmation letter, and the person will be able to receive medical benefits under the National Health Insurance at a medical institution.
Ji Young-mi, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, "Through this pilot project, we will be able to detect the influx of infectious diseases and new and variant pathogens from overseas into Korea at an early stage, and will be able to quarantine people entering from overseas if they show respiratory symptoms.
"We hope that rapid testing will enable people to access medical facilities at this stage."
