Before adopting Doon-Yi, Choi visited Kara's shelter twice and met Doon-Yi. "Doon-Yi was so active that it didn't seem like she was seven years old.
"From the moment we met, she showed off her belly and was adorable," she told Yonhap News. Choi had previously lost her dog, Woo Yang-i, and was suffering from pet loss syndrome.
