The police announced that they were investigating the matter. A was discussing deposit products with an employee at Saemaul Safekeeping in Jung-gu, Daegu, at around 3:25 p.m. on the previous day when he pulled out a knife from his jacket and shot himself.
Mr. A, who was wearing a mask and hat, is suspected of threatening the staff, stealing 40 million won (approximately 4.2 million yen) in cash and fleeing.
He stuffed the money into a bag he had prepared beforehand. At the time, there were no security guards or other customers in the bank, only one other female employee.
The police, who responded to the report, blocked Mr. A's escape route.
After analyzing the video footage, police arrested Mr. A, who was hiding in a building 500 meters away from the bank, about an hour after the incident. He offered no resistance during the arrest.
All the cash was recovered and no one was injured.
According to a police investigation, Mr. A planned his crimes in advance, for example by choosing financial institutions with few people.
In order to avoid police pursuit after the crime, the suspect took off his jacket after leaving the financial institution and covered the bag containing the cash with a cloth.
A police official said, "It is estimated that it took him five minutes to pull out the knife, steal the money, and flee," and added, "We plan to apply for an arrest warrant."
Police believe that Mr. A, who has no clear occupation, committed the crime to repay debts, and are currently investigating the details of the crime.
