Seoul, South Korea: ”Congratulations to North Jeolla Province for being selected as a candidate city for the 2036 Summer Olympics”
Seoul City, South Korea, announced at the general meeting of the Korean Olympic Committee held on the 28th that North Jeolla Province has been selected as a candidate city for the 2036 Summer Olympics.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government issued a statement in the afternoon saying, "We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jeollabuk-do for being selected by the IOC as the host city for the 2036 Olympics."
"Seoul will use the contact channels and networks it has built with the IOC to provide full support so that the decision can be finalized."
He continued, "Following the Seoul Olympics, Jeollabuk-do will host the Summer Olympics for the second time in the history of the Republic of Korea.
"If we are successful in hosting the Olympics, it will be a valuable opportunity to further enhance the national prestige of the Republic of Korea," he said.
"Hosting the event in North Jeolla Province will not only revitalize the local economy, but will also mark a historic turning point for the balanced growth of the Republic of Korea," he said.
Seoul Metropolitan Government stated, "Once again, we congratulate Jeollabuk-do on being selected as the candidate city for the bid, and Seoul will be with you until the end." Meanwhile, Jeollabuk-do held a press conference at the Olympic Stadium in Songpa-gu, Seoul on the same day.
At the 2025 regular delegate meeting of the Korean Physical Education Association held at the Seoul Parktel, Seoul received 49 votes out of a total of 61 to select the candidate city for the 2036 Olympic Games.
One vote was invalid. This means that North Jeolla Province will now take on the challenge of hosting the Summer Olympics for the first time in South Korea in 48 years since the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Prior to the vote, Seoul Mayor Oh Sehun and Jeollabuk-do Governor Kim Gwan-young took to the stage as presenters and gave 45-minute presentations.
After each candidate's presentation, there was a 15-minute question and answer session. Jeollabuk-do appealed for "balanced national development" and put "solidarity among local cities" at the forefront,
It beat out Seoul by a large margin, emphasizing its experience hosting the event successfully and the strength of its various infrastructures.
