Number of marriages in South Korea last year ”increased” by 14.8%... a new record high
The number of marriages in South Korea last year increased by 14.8% compared to the previous year, while the number of divorces decreased by 1.3% compared to the previous year.
According to the "2024 Marriage and Divorce Statistics," the number of marriages last year was 222,000, down 14.8% (20,900) from the previous year.
This is the highest increase in the number of marriages since statistics began in 1970. The last time the increase in the number of marriages compared to the previous year was in double digits was in 1980 (13.9%).
The average age at first marriage was 33.9 years for men and 31.6 years for women. This is a decrease of 0.1 years for men and an increase of 0.1 years for women compared to the previous year.
The average age for remarriage was 51.6 for men and 47.1 for women, up 0.1 and 0.2 years, respectively. Meanwhile, the number of divorces last year was 91,000, down 1.3% from the previous year.
Looking at the length of marriage, the highest rate of divorces was after 5 to 9 years at 18.0%, followed by those after 4 years or less (16.7%) and those after 30 years or more (16.6%).
The average age at divorce was 50.4 years for men and 47.1 years for women, up 0.5 years from the previous year.
