Japan to include ”Dokdo as Japanese territory” in next year's high school textbooks = Korean report
It has been confirmed that many of the social studies textbooks to be used by Japanese high school students from next spring will again include the statement that "Takeshima (known in Korean as Dokdo) is Japanese territory."
On the 25th, Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology held a general meeting of the Textbook Inspection Research Council and finalized the results of the review of textbooks to be used in high schools nationwide from the 2026 academic year.
The social studies textbooks that passed the examination were: 7 types of "general geography", 11 types of "general history", 12 types of "public", and 1 type of "politics and economics".
According to Jiji Press, all textbooks for "geography, history, and public affairs" deal with Takeshima, and the description "Japan's inherent territory" was added after screening.
In addition, in a "Politics and Economics" textbook, the expression "they were brought to Japan from the Korean Peninsula" was changed to "they were mobilized" through screening.
In March 2018, the Japanese government announced in its high school curriculum guidelines that Takeshima is an inherent part of Japanese territory and that it will work toward a peaceful resolution of the territorial dispute.
The aim of the bill is to ensure that textbooks include a "consensus government view" on modern history.
Claims about Takeshima in Japanese textbooks are reinforced not only in high schools but also in elementary and junior high school textbooks.
Tokyo Shoseki is planning to change the description of Takeshima in its elementary school social studies textbooks that pass the 2023 certification exam from "It is occupied by South Korea and Japan is protesting against it" to "It is occupied by South Korea and Japan is protesting against it."
In addition, most junior high school social studies textbooks that passed the examination last year also state that South Korea is illegally occupying Takeshima and that Takeshima is a part of Japan's
It describes it as an inherent territory.
