South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff: ”Landmine explosion causes numerous casualties among North Korean troops”
It has been confirmed that a landmine exploded while North Korean troops were working in the frontline area (the area along the North-South border), resulting in numerous casualties.
In addition, North Korea sent more than 3,000 additional troops to Russia between January and February of this year.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff made the announcement in a report titled "Recent Trends of the North Korean Military" published on the 27th.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said, "Work on the front lines, which was temporarily suspended due to winter training at the end of last year, will resume.
"Since the beginning of this month, dozens to hundreds of people have been deployed to reinforce the iron fence that will blockade North Korea," he said. "A few days ago, a mine explosion caused many casualties, but instead,
"It appears that the operation is being carried out in an unreasonable manner, given that the military forces to be deployed are not yet prepared," he said. This is the first landmine explosion this year, but last year there were more than 20 major explosions.
Regarding this, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, "It does not pose a direct threat to our nation's security operations," and "There is no risk that our nation's operational activities will be exposed to the North Korean military."
"We are taking this into consideration and are maintaining vigilance and readiness," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
"We are continuing to cooperate with North Korea in providing information," he said. "Of the 11,000 or so North Korean troops deployed, about 4,000 were killed or injured, and we have learned that an additional 3,000 or more were deployed between January and February of this year."
"North Korea is believed to have provided a considerable number of SRBMs (short-range ballistic missiles), 170mm self-propelled guns, and more than 22 240mm multiple launch guns," the report said.
However, depending on the war situation, the number is expected to increase further."
