The National Police Agency's acting commissioner Lee HoYeon said at a press conference in Seodaemun, Seoul on the morning of the 31st that the agency will provide around 10,000 vehicles to the police, and will take strict measures against any acts of instigating fires in consultation with special judicial police officers.
At a regular press conference held at the Seodaemun District Police Headquarters, he said, "We have mobilized all of our police capabilities to provide support in this forest fire situation."
The Gyeongbuk National Police Agency has issued a "Level A Emergency" to its 22 police stations to assist in putting out the fires.
The National Police Agency deployed 10,369 riot police from city and road police agencies across the country to the scene and took charge of preventing further loss of life due to the spread of the wildfire.
In particular, disaster situation rooms were set up in each city and road office across the country to assist with searches, control traffic, and identify the identities of those killed.
Acting Chief Lee said, "Currently, police are controlling the scene of forest fires, securing routes for emergency rescue vehicles, and conducting preventive patrols in preparation for burglaries.
"We are also conducting identity checks on the 27 people who died in the wildfires," he said. He added, "We will consult with special judicial police officers and take strict action against any acts of inciting fires."
