South Korea's ruling party calls on government to ”strengthen security for judges” ahead of impeachment trial of President Yoon
The ruling People Power Party has called on the government to take all necessary measures, including strengthening security for constitutional judges, ahead of the impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol, scheduled for the 4th.
On the 1st, the party's floor leader Kwon Seong-dong demanded that acting president Han Deok-soo strengthen security for constitutional judges and provide constitutional justice services in connection with the announcement of the impeachment case against President Yoon on the 4th.
He called for the maintenance of order and security around the courthouse. Representative Kwon welcomed the Constitutional Court's decision to set a date for the ruling and said, "I hope that a fair verdict will be handed down based on legal principles and conscience."
Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kwon Yeong-sei also said, "I hope that each judge will consider the national interest and make neutral and fair decisions."
"Justice will be shown in the name of the Constitution against attempts to destabilize national affairs and trample on the Constitution for political purposes," Shin Dong-Wook, the country's chief spokesman, said in a commentary.
"It is time for the Constitutional Court to fulfill its responsibility to history and the people so that the law and common sense do not collapse and the people's heartfelt wishes are not betrayed," he said.
He added, "Both the ruling and opposition parties should calmly accept the Constitutional Court's decision and abide by whatever decision it makes for the sake of the future of the Republic of Korea."
