Binance's former CEO, Changpeng Zhao, has joined Pakistan's Cryptocurrency Commission as a strategic advisor.
On the 7th (local time), The Block cited local media as saying that by joining the Pakistan Cryptocurrency Board as an advisor, Zhao will be in charge of building local cryptocurrency infrastructure, education, and expanding adoption.
His joining is interpreted as part of a broader strategy by the Pakistani government to develop the blockchain industry and attract international investment.
The Pakistan Cryptocurrency Board is a government-affiliated regulatory body that was established in mid-March this year to oversee blockchain and cryptocurrency-related projects.
The goal is to provide a clear regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry and stimulate a blockchain-based financial ecosystem.
Zhao recently said through X, "I am officially and unofficially involved in several political activities.
"I am advising the government on the creation of a regulatory framework for virtual currencies and blockchain-based government efficiency solutions," he said, clarifying that he will "not get involved in politics and will focus solely on cryptocurrencies."
Meanwhile, Zhao pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act in accordance with an agreement with the US Department of Justice in November 2023 and stepped down as CEO of Binance.
He served a four-month sentence and paid a $50 million fine.
