泥酔で時速133km暴走…歩行者を死亡させた男に懲役8年=韓国
Drunken man killed pedestrian at 133km/h after driving at 8 years in prison in South Korea
The first-instance court handed down a heavy sentence to a man in his 30s who denied driving while drunk and causing the death of a pedestrian.
According to the Korean legal profession on the 14th, the 9th Exclusive Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Judge Ko Yong-sik)
Defendant A (31), who was indicted on charges of drunk driving, hit-and-run, and dangerous driving resulting in injury, was sentenced to eight years in prison. Defendant A was killed at around 2 a.m. on August 13 last year in a car crash in Bonmyeong-dong, YOO SUN-gu.
He was indicted on charges of driving an SUV while drunk (blood alcohol concentration 0.135%) at a speed exceeding the legal limit and hitting and killing a pedestrian who was crossing the street.
Defendant A drove about 40 kilometers from Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do to Daejeon, ignoring red lights at a speed of 133 kilometers per hour, far exceeding the legal speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour.
At the time of the accident, Defendant A and two other people, including a foreign worker, were in the vehicle, but all of them denied being drivers during police questioning, confusing the investigation.
However, based on an examination of items left in the car, as well as footage from dashcams and security cameras, the police identified Defendant A as the driver and sent the case to the prosecutor's office.
The court acknowledged that Defendant A suffered from panic disorder, but stated that "he was not driving himself, but was being driven by a substitute driver."
The court did not accept the claim. It explained the reason for the sentence, saying, "The obligation to provide relief and other measures and the obligation to provide medical evidence were all neglected, and the victim's family is calling for severe punishment."
