According to Hollywood media outlets Variety and People on the 19th (local time), Youn Yuh Jung recently explained the background behind her decision to appear in Wedding Banquet in a media interview and mentioned her son.
In an interview with People Magazine, Youn Yuh Jung said, “My personal life is very closely related to this movie,” adding, “Korea is a very conservative country. People never reveal their homosexuality publicly or in front of their own parents. But my son is gay and I shared my experience with him in this film,” she revealed.
In an interview with the Hong Kong media outlet South China Morning Post, Youn Yuh Jung also said, “My older son came out as gay in 2000, and when New York legalized same-sex marriage, I held his wedding there,” adding, “It was still a secret in Korea. So the whole family went to New York,” she explained.
She also jokingly said that she now loves her son-in-law (son's same-sex spouse), more than her own son.
However, Youn Yuh Jung said, “I don't know what the reaction will be when I return to Korea. They might throw the book at me,” she said. Adding, “I hope Korea will open up their heart to me,” but added, “I still don't know if that will actually happen."
In an interview with Variety Magazine, Youn Yuh Jung also answered a question about the theme of the film, saying, “It's a very personal theme for me. The line I say to my grandson in the film, “(Whoever you are), you are my grandson,” comes from my personal experience.
Youn Yuh Jung plays the grandmother of a gay Korean male protagonist in 'The Wedding Banquet', a film released in North America on the 18th. The film is a remake of Taiwanese director Ang Lee's 1993 film 'The Wedding Banquet', and depicts the turmoil that ensues when the homosexual protagonist is forced into a sham marriage by his parents.
