”Women who don't have children will go to jail” - male teacher at girls' high school makes controversial remarks in South Korea
It has been alleged that a male teacher at a girls' high school in Incheon, South Korea, compared childbirth to military service during class and said, "Women who don't have children should be sent to jail."
According to the Incheon City Office of Education on the 21st, a post was made on Twitter the previous day (20th) in the afternoon saying, "Teacher A of a girls' high school in Incheon spoke during class.
The article, "Let's make public the truth of what we say," was posted along with a two-minute audio file. According to the audio file, Teacher A was talking about a past ruling by the Constitutional Court that the military bonus points system was unconstitutional.
"I think this is the worst sentence I've ever known," he said. "If a man doesn't serve in the military, he goes to jail, but a woman has never gone to jail for not having children."
He continued, "(Giving birth) is not an obligation. That's why (our country's) birth rate is 0.67. Women who don't give birth during their childbearing years should be sent to jail.
"There is gender equality," he said. Teacher A is said to have made these remarks during a class on "Politics and Law" on the 17th of this month.
The city's education department and school were also made aware of the incident and launched an investigation.
