President Trump: ”South Korea's military expenditures amount to billions of dollars... separate from tariff negotiations”
US President Donald Trump has made clear his position that the defense spending of allies such as South Korea will be treated separately from tariff negotiations.
President Trump said in an interview with Time magazine published on the 25th (local time),
Regarding the ongoing tariff negotiations, he said, "I will set fair-price tariffs on a country-by-country basis at a certain point in the not-too-distant future," and that when setting country-by-country tariffs, "statistics and everything else will be taken into consideration."
He mentioned value-added tax (VAT) and tariffs on U.S. goods as items to be considered, and said, "Should we pay for their military? For example, should we pay for South Korea?
"We pay billions of dollars to the military. We also pay billions to Japan and other countries," he said. "But I think the military payments are a separate item."
This is interpreted as meaning that South Korea's share of the cost of stationing US troops in South Korea will be handled in a separate negotiation from the ongoing trade talks with South Korea.
It took place on the 22nd of this month.
