Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung's violation of election law, appeal hearing to be held at 3 p.m. on the 1st (South Korea)
On the 1st, a full bench of the Supreme Court will hand down its ruling on the appeal of Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung for violating the Public Offices Election Act.
On the 29th, according to the legal community, the Supreme Court announced that it would declare its decision on Lee's violation of the Public Offices Election Act.
The trial date has been set for 3 p.m. on the 1st. The ruling will be made at the Supreme Court's Grand Bench. On the 22nd, the Supreme Court referred Lee's election law case to a full bench. It was assigned to a four-judge panel.
The Supreme Court held the first hearing on the day the case was referred, and then held a second hearing two days later, on the 24th, to discuss the substantive issues.
The full bench usually meets about once a month. The fact that two hearings were held in April alone, at the same time as the referral, was unusually fast.
The legal profession has interpreted this as a very fast pace. Candidate Lee is facing charges including saying, "I don't know the late Kim Moon-gi 1st Director of the Seongnam Urban Development Corporation," ahead of the 2021 presidential election.
He is also accused of publishing false information regarding the change in use of the Korea Food Research Institute's site in Baekhyun-dong.
The first trial sentenced him to one year in prison with two years of probation in November last year.
If the Supreme Court finds Lee guilty, the ruling will be overturned and the Supreme Court will acquit him. If the Supreme Court finds Lee guilty, the Supreme Court will be able to overturn the ruling.
A fourth trial will be held in retrial.
