People's Power lawmaker Na Kyung-wan: ”Forcing the unification of presidential candidates is a clear violation of the party constitution and rules” (South Korea)
Rep. Na Kyung-won, who was a presidential candidate for the People Power Party (ruling party), said in response to the party leadership's assertion that "it is possible to replace Kim Moon-soo as presidential candidate,"
"This is a clear violation of the party constitution and rules, and a violation of party democracy," he said. On the 8th, Rep. Luo wrote on his Facebook page, "What is urgent now is not unification without principles, but the awakening of the party and
"It's a restoration of principle," he said. He then joined forces with candidate Kim by saying, "We must stop the series of actions related to forced unification."
Candidate Kim reportedly met with Rep. Ra the day before to discuss pending issues, including the issue of unifying the party's presidential candidate.
Prior to this, the People's Power leadership said, "When there is a reasonable reason, the Presidential Candidate Election Management Committee will deliberate and the Supreme Council (emergency response committee) will decide on the matter.
He hinted at the possibility of changing the presidential candidate based on Article 74, Clause 2 of the party constitution, which states that "the party may decide on matters relating to the selection of the presidential candidate."
This is in response to Kim's reluctance to unify his candidacy with former Prime Minister Han Deok-soo.
"Even at yesterday's general assembly, the party arbitrarily interpreted the party constitution and rules, and promoted the replacement of candidates or the forced unification of candidates through the national committee and party convention," Rep. Luo said.
"Many lawmakers expressed deep concern about the move to impose a ban on presidential candidates," he said. "If the leadership arbitrarily applies the party constitution and rules, we will be embroiled in legal disputes and the People Power Party's presidential candidates will be unable to participate in the election."
In the worst case scenario, we may have to hold elections without the support of the opposition parties. We must stop this now. We must abandon our role as a public party and go down the path of mutual destruction.
"What is urgently needed now is not unification without principles, but an awakening of the party and a restoration of principles."
