Convenience store cream buns sell one every two seconds, factory expands to boost exports = Korea
Food manufacturer Foodcore sold a cumulative 77 million units of "Yonsei Milk Fresh Cream Bun" from its launch in January 2022 to the end of April 2025.
The product gained popularity after being sold exclusively at CU, and is currently being sold at one every two seconds. Kim said, "What Koreans hate most is bread with gaps in it. We want to fill it up with cream,
"I came up with the idea of making bread with cream in it," he said. For this reason, the company puts the most effort into the way the cream is poured into the bread. The factory has a dedicated line where about 10 people pour the cream.
If the machine puts in too much cream, the bread may break, so the machine pours the cream first, and then the person pours it in.
In 2024, the company exported the product under the export brand "Swelly" to Taiwan, Mongolia, the United States, and Australia for the first time.
The car is being sold in six countries, including the U.S., Canada, Germany, and the U.S., and has generated sales of 1.4 billion won (approximately 145.53 million yen) in six months. The car is currently in talks with 20 countries for exports. The company plans to reach a sales target of 2.2 billion won (approximately 145.53 million yen) by 2025 from exports alone.
The company expects sales of 5 billion won (approximately 2.598 billion yen). To meet demand overseas, it is investing 8 billion won (approximately 831.64 million yen) to build an automated cream bun production line.
This would allow production of 115,200 loaves of bread for export per day.
