20 Korean family members living in Iran evacuate 1,200 km in government-provided bus
Following armed conflict between Israel and Iran, 20 people, including South Korean nationals and Iranian families, who were living in Iran, were evacuated with government assistance.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (equivalent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan), on the 19th, a total of two people, 18 South Korean nationals and two family members of Iranian nationality, were killed.
The group departed Tehran on the morning of the 17th (local time) on a chartered bus provided by the government, and traveled about 1,200 kilometers to arrive in Turkmenistan, which borders northern Iran, on the evening of the 18th.
The journey reportedly took more than 30 hours, including breaks. The evacuees, accompanied by staff from the Iranian embassy, arrived safely at the Iran-Turkmenistan border checkpoint.
The two men traveled to Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, on a flight provided by the government. The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "As armed conflict between the two countries continues, concerns about the safety of our people are growing, and Iran's airspace has been closed."
"Taking this into consideration, we assisted in the evacuation of our nationals in Iran by land," he said. As of the 13th, when armed conflict began in earnest, it was understood that around 110 South Korean nationals were staying in Iran.
The government plans to consider providing evacuation assistance to those remaining in the area if necessary. A rapid response team to facilitate smooth evacuation has also been dispatched from South Korea to Turkmenistan.
The government has provided assistance with arranging entry and return flights, but each person is responsible for their own accommodation costs. Some of the Koreans are expected to travel to South Korea in the future.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "For citizens currently in Israel and Iran, the travel warning for those countries is at level 3 (departure recommendation)
Considering that their status has been upgraded, we strongly urge them to pay particular attention to their personal safety, follow the embassy's instructions, and depart promptly."
