"We hope that the government will stop its campaigns of 'struggle' and 'opposition intimidation' and respect the power of the people as a partner in national politics," he said.
He later issued a statement saying, "I congratulate Chairman Chung on his election. However, at the same time, it is true that I am concerned about 'Chung Cheong-rae's Democratic Party of Korea.'"
Chief spokesman Kwak said, "Chairman Chung is considered a leading hardliner within the Democratic Party, and he is the chairman of the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee, which holds a huge number of seats.
"During the Democratic Party's general meeting, they were solely focused on bashing the opposition party, targeting their endless loyalty to President Lee Jae-myung and their hard-line supporters."
He continued, "Recently, under the pretext of 'ending the civil war,' an anti-constitutional bill has been proposed that would allow the Diet to request a ruling on the dissolution of unconstitutional political parties, and there have even been attempts to 'eliminate the opposition parties.'
"The fact that Chairman Chung's goal is not to 'strengthen the ruling and opposition parties' but to 'run the reins of power' and 'legislative dictatorship' is all too clear," he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Spokesperson Kwak said, "The Democratic Party of Korea is not engaged in political disputes, but is working to prepare substantive policies for national unity and resolving people's livelihoods.
