It was the first instruction he gave as soon as he returned to work after his first vacation since taking office.
Presidential Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said at a briefing that afternoon, "Yesterday, a safety net was being removed at a construction site for a new apartment building in Uijeongbu.
"We are sorry to report that a worker in his 50s died in a fall," he said, conveying President Lee's instructions. Spokesperson Kang added, "We will maintain the current system of sharing and disseminating information through the National Situation Room, but we will not share information with the President.
"Right now, there are cases where people find out about an accident only after reading about it in the media. I have instructed them to put in place a system to report the incident earlier," he continued.
President Lee added that he would like to emphasize that "pre- and post-event measures to prevent industrial accidents and the measures that have been taken so far will be announced to the Ministry of Employment and Labor at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (12th).
Regarding this, Spokesperson Kang said, "It is President Lee's strong will to dramatically reduce work-related deaths. It is not right for workers to be injured or lose their lives while working.
"We will prove our position as the world's 10th largest economic power through worker safety so that such incidents do not occur again," he said. President Lee received a report on the industrial accident after returning to work from his vacation this morning.
The previous afternoon, a worker in his 50s fell from a height of about six stories at a new apartment building construction site of DL Construction in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province.
He was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest, but died during treatment. The deceased worker was a subcontractor of DL Construction, and was installing safety hooks to prevent falls while dismantling the mesh on the exterior wall of an apartment building.
It was reported that the plane crashed due to a malfunction.
