As former Fatherland Reform Party leader Cho Kuk was released from prison on a special pardon for Liberation Day, former People's Power Emergency Response Chairman Kim Jong-in said, "(Cho's) ultimate goal was
He will run for president. Those around him will also be preparing for that,” said former Chairman Kim. On the 15th, he appeared on CBS Radio’s “Park Jae-hong’s Battle” and said,
Regarding the possibility of the former chairman returning to politics, Kim said, "He will begin political action very soon."
"There is no clear candidate to succeed the leader, and Cho is the most likely candidate to emerge as a presidential candidate," he predicted.
However, former Chairman Kim said, "I wonder if former Chairman Cho is really in the frame of the Democratic Party of Japan.
"We'll have to wait and see whether he can achieve his goals by leading the Fatherland Reform Party abroad, or whether he will merge with the Democratic Party and achieve his own goals," he added.
Kim, former chairman, pointed out, "It will be difficult to achieve our goal unless former Chairman Cho unifies the ruling party's candidates."
He added, "There is still a lot of time left, and the world is changing so quickly that former Chairman Cho is seen as an old man, and young people within the Democratic Party of Korea are also thinking, 'I think that's why I'm going to be a leader.'"
"Politicians can suddenly emerge as presidential candidates, so I can't make any definitive statements in advance," he said.
He was sentenced to two years in prison for covering up the investigation, but was released after eight months as he was included in the special pardon for Liberation Day.
In his first words after his release from prison, Cho said, "Today's pardon, restoration and release of my rights is a testament to the misuse and abuse of prosecutorial power.
"This will be recorded as one of the symbolic moments marking the end of prosecutorial dictatorship."
