Director Jang Hoon's new film "Dreaming of the Peach Blossom Spring" has confirmed its main cast and commenced full-scale filming on the 14th.
"Dreaming of the Peach Blossom Spring" depicts the story of brothers "Prince Suyang" and "Prince Anpyeong", who, after the completion of the painting "Dreaming of the Peach Blossom Spring" – which portrays a beautiful yet strange landscape seen in a dream – each begin to dream of their own distinct utopia. Centred on the painting "Dream of the Peach Blossom Spring", completed in three days after Prince Anpyeong, son of King Sejong the Great, dictated the ideal paradise he saw in his dream to the painter An Gyeon, it depicts a moment in the Joseon Dynasty facing dramatic fate.
The casting lineup also draws attention. Kim Nam-gil and Park Bo-gum portray "Prince Suyang" and "Prince Anpyeong" respectively – the closest of King Sejong's sons, yet destined to pursue divergent dreams.
Kim Nam-gil portrays "Prince Suyang", driven by ambition to become king. While attempting to discern his younger brother "Prince Anpyeong's" desires through the painting "Dream of the Peach Blossom Spring", he gradually transforms into a cruel figure. Kim Nam-gil is expected to showcase a wide range of expressions through Prince Suyang's evolution – from the gradual realisation of his own ambition to the inner turmoil of suspicion and anxiety towards "Anpyeong".
Park Bo-gum portrays "Prince Anpyeong", a man who cherished beauty, delighted in collecting artworks, and was hailed as the 'Prince of Elegance' in Joseon. A master calligrapher representing Joseon, he excelled in poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Through "Prince Anpyeong", who sought to realise the beautiful paradise he saw in his dreams, he is set to captivate audiences once more.
Meanwhile, Lee Hyun-wook portrays "An Gyeon", the painter representing Joseon who painted the "Dream of the Peach Blossom Spring" and serves as the Prince's most understanding artistic partner and friend. Lee Hyun-wook portrays him as an observer and chronicler who understood even the innermost thoughts of Prince Anpyeong, possessing an unyielding integrity that did not bow before power. This distinct portrayal from his previous work promises to add even richer depth and intrigue to 'Dreaming of the Peach Blossom Spring'.
Here, actors whose very names command the screen – Park Won-saeng, Choi Deok-mun, Ryu Seung-soo, Cha Seung-be, Kim Byung-chul, Kim Tae-hoon, Park Myung-hoon, Kim Nam-hee – portray figures entangled in the fate of the Joseon Dynasty, intensifying anticipation for the film's fierce and dynamic unfolding.
Furthermore, 'Dreaming of a Peach Blossom Paradise' is garnering significant anticipation as the first period drama by director Jang Hun, who has consistently delivered memorable works across eras and genres, from the 12.18 million-viewer hit 'A Taxi Driver' to 'High Ground', 'Secret Reunion', and 'The Movie is the Movie'.
