[Official Interview] What are the similarities between Moon SungHyun and Hyunsuk (CIX), the stars of ”The Chairman is a Delinquent High School Student!?” and the characters they played?
Q: Please tell us about the plot of "The Chairman is a Delinquent High School Student!?" and the role you played. A: Moon SungHyun: "The Chairman is a Delinquent High School Student!?" is about a high school student who is the worst in grades and becomes the chairman of the school.
It is a school TV series that unfolds as the students try to destroy the school. I played Na Isoo, a high school student with the worst grades who becomes the head of the school. A Hyun-seok: I played Boo Ro-eun, the vice-president of Parae High School.
Q: How did you come to star in this production, and what was your impression when you first read the script?
A Moon SungHyun: I auditioned and was cast in this film.
Although it was a comical school story, it also had a lot of strange scenes and unusual content that I had never seen before, so I think I really enjoyed reading the script.
A Hyun-seok: I also wanted to star in a pairing, and I was thankfully chosen.
I auditioned for the role and decided to participate. When I first read the script, I thought it was very interesting and had a lot of comical elements, just like Sunghyun said, so the filming was also very fun.
I thought it would be fun. Q: What do you think is the charm of each character? A: Moon SungHyun: Is is very confident and has a strong will when he does something.
He acts as if he knows everything, but he is not very good at studying, especially with Batan, who is better at studying than him, and the students at Pare High, who are unlike anything he has ever met.
A Hyunseok: If Lee Soo is fire, Rowoon is like water. He's good at sports, he's good at studying, and he's good with friends.
He is loved by everyone and is the envy of everyone. He has a crush on Batan, who is better than him and works harder than him in every way.
Please tell us about the similarities between you and the character you played, and also about any areas that you feel are different from yourself.
A Moon SungHyun: I think I'm similar to Yi-soo in that we're both bright and confident. The difference between us is that I think Yi-soo is the type who acts before he thinks.
But I think I'm the type of person who thinks things through first and then acts, so I think that's where we differ. A Hyunseok: Rowoon and I have something in common. We both put our all into whatever we do.
I think we work together to achieve good results. The difference is that Rowoon is calm and collected and cautious in everything he does, but I'm the opposite, and I don't think I'm that calm.
Q: What was your first impression when you two met? A: Moon SungHyun: Actually, we first met on the day of the script reading...
- Hyunsuk: That's right. - Moon Sunghyun: (Hyunsuk) is very tall, isn't he?
When he first came in, as you all know, he was very handsome! So, I was a little worried that I might look really small. And he was really good looking.
He's so cool... Anyway, my first impression was that he was cool. A Hyunseok: He compliments me a lot. I also met Songhyun for the first time at the script reading.
However, that day, I was about 5 or 10 minutes late. So I walked in out of breath and found Sang Hyun sitting across from me. I was actually curious about what kind of actor he was, so I wanted to meet him.
I searched for it before, but when I met him in person, I felt that someone who has been acting for a long time definitely has a different vibe. - Moon SungHyun: It's SungHyun...
- Hyunseok: Ah...! Sunghyun! Sunghyun! Okay, anyway... (laughs) Q: What was the funniest NG during filming or the most memorable behind-the-scenes moment?
A Moon SungHyun: I shot the scene where I'm surprised after eating lobster by myself. It was CG, so I set up a green screen behind me and filmed my facial expression by myself.
(The director) asked me to exaggerate my expressions, so I tried my best to make funny expressions, but even when I got a NG, I laughed really hard.
A Hyunseok: For me, it was the scene where we memorized the math song "Official" while DJing in the library and danced together. I was really impressed.
I didn't know it would be that bad when I was just reading the script, but when I actually danced and yelled "Official Mathematics," I thought, "I'll never have an experience like this again."
So I worked hard while having fun with my co-stars. Q: You two play polar opposites, an honor student who is good at studying and a student who hates studying. What was it like in real life?
A Moon SungHyun: I'm still a student, but I used to study really hard. I went to cram school every day and was also the vice president, but I was still working in the entertainment industry.
I can't do it as well as I used to. But I don't think I was a student who was bad at studying like Is-su. A Hyun-seok: I was also the student council president when I was young, in elementary and middle school.
I was a good student. I was a trainee from high school onwards, so I don't have a lot of experience at school, but when I think back on it, that's how it felt.
What are your favorite subjects? A Moon SungHyun: I like PE the most. A Hyunseok: PE is good.
(laughs) I liked memorization subjects. Japanese and history. I think I studied them really hard.
As Hyunsuk mentioned, there is a scene where a DJ is invited to the school library, but do you have any memories or events from your school days that you remember fondly?
A Moon SungHyun: I'm still in school, so the most recent school trip I went on last year is the one I remember the most.
Hyunseok: When I think about it, rather than big events like sports festivals, I like going to eat lunch after the fourth period.
It's the little moments like when you're counting down the days until class before you leave that are the more precious memories.
- Hyunseok: Right? - Moon SungHyun: I was only thinking about it during the events, but I can remember the events if I try. I went to school last week too.
However, in my department, we often play soccer during lunch break. I like playing soccer. So the most comfortable moment is when I'm waiting for the third class to finish, eat lunch, and play soccer.
- Hyunseok: That's true. - Q: Did Hyunseok tell Songhyun about something he absolutely had to do when he was a student?
What advice would you give as a senior? A. Hyunseok: As a senior in life? (laughs) In school... the most important thing is the friends you make for life, so I think it's important to be with those friends like now.
I think the best thing to do is to have fun playing soccer or something. Q: As Sung Hyun said, there is a scene in the drama where lobster appears in the school lunch.
Is there a school lunch menu that you liked? A Moon SungHyun: When I think of the school lunches I had in elementary school, I think Korean food was the best, not something new or challenging.
I think I was a fan of Korean food. I liked dishes like kalbi jjim (braised beef ribs). - Hyunseok: I agree. I also like Korean food. There were kids around me who didn't eat kimchi.
There was a lot. So all the kimchi was mine... - Moon SungHyun: (laughs) - Hyunseok: If my friends don't eat it, it's mine.
(Laughs) Korean food, kalbi jjim, meat, etc. I think that's what I liked the most.
There are many unique students in the play, but which character would you like to be friends with when you were a student?
A Moon SungHyun: A character I want to be friends with... I want to be friends with a character like Rowoon, who is good at studying, tall and cool.
A Hyunseok: I like people who are straightforward and unhesitant. That's why I like characters like "Isu" and those who are kind and approach me purely.
The character "Hogyu" would want to be friends with someone like that. Q: Do you keep in contact or meet up frequently after filming has ended?
A Hyunseok: Songhyun, myself, and Junhyuk who played Hogyu, the three of us talked about eating samgyeopsal, eating meat.
But Sunghyun has to go to school. Junhyuk and I are adults and we have plenty of time together, but Sunghyun has school, so we talked about hanging out more often after he graduates.
Q: Mr. Songhyun, you have appeared in works of various genres so far, but what are the fun and challenges that are unique to school-related works?
A Moon SungHyun: Yes. I have filmed with students before, but I have never really done a school series like this.
This is the first time I've shot a group of girls. Compared to other locations, shooting school-themed scenes is a lot of fun because the people there are usually close in age to me, and there are a lot of people my age... Of course, most of them are older than me, but
Still, the atmosphere on set was playful and fun, and I think that was a good part. There were a lot of people who were willing to joke around, so I was really glad that I was able to film without any stress.
Hyunseok has also appeared in school dramas up until now, playing characters with a gentle and charming personality, a perfect student council president who is the best in the school, and this time, a "manga boy" who is both good-looking and athletic.
You played the role of a man who seems to have come out of a dream world. What were the joys and difficulties you felt while acting in a school-themed role? A. Hyunseok: I think the most fun part was that I think it was because of my age now.
It was easy to express myself well, and since everyone was around the same age, I think I had a lot of fun filming.
I think I still have some immaturity in my acting, so I tried my best to make up for it as much as possible. Q. Song Hyun-san, you are still a high school student.
Na Yi Soo's character is a high school student who becomes the chairman of the school. If you were to take on the role now, what kind of school would you like to create?
A Moon SungHyun: Aside from the necessary rules and regulations, the thing that bothers me the most is that I'm not good at mornings.
If I were to become the president, I would like to delay the start time of classes a little. - Hyunseok: That's a good idea. - Q: If you were to become the president, what kind of high school would you like to create?
Hyunseok: First of all, I think that school lunches are very important, so I order lunches from a high-quality company. Also, I think that the reason to go to school should be fun.
Rather than going back and forth, I want to create a school where each person can actively pursue their own special skills. Q: If you were to hold a fan meeting in Japan, would you hold one for your fans?
What do you want to prepare? Are there any events you want to hold in Japan? A Moon SungHyun: I've never held a fan meeting before, so it's a romantic idea.
If I were to hold a fan meeting in Japan, I would like to sing like my seniors do, prepare some dance moves even though I'm not very good at them, and have fun doing all sorts of things.
Hyunseok, you are currently a member of "CIX". How did the other members react when you were announced to be appearing in a TV series?
Hyunseok: I didn't have any particular reaction. I just heard that you were going to be in a TV series and thought, "Oh really? Good luck. I'm rooting for you."
Everyone was like that. I think a lot of people were hoping for the best. Q: While you were working with CIX, you also had concerts and events in Japan.
What do you remember most about your activities in Japan? A Hyunseok: Actually, the day before yesterday (interview date: March 2024), I went to Japan for an event.
However, every time I go to Japan, I feel happy. I have been watching a lot of anime and movies since I was a child. There are a lot of Japanese landscapes in them, and the weather and cityscapes in particular touch my heart.
When I go sightseeing after my schedule is over, I feel a warm feeling and want to come back again. -Q Do you have any favorite anime? A
Hyunseok: I really like the Japanese movie "I'll Date with You Tomorrow, Yesterday's You" and I watch almost all anime.
I really watch those kinds of movies. Q If you two were to travel to Japan, where would you like to go or what would you like to eat? A Moon SungHyun: I went to Osaka for 3 nights and 4 days last year.
However, there was one thing that was a little disappointing. Even though I had made a schedule and planned everything, I couldn't eat sushi. I really wanted to eat Japanese sushi...
Next time I go to Japan, I'd like to go to Tokyo since I've already been to Osaka once, and I'd also like to try some proper Japanese sushi.
A Hyunseok: For me it's Sapporo! I went to Sapporo on a snowy day and ate motsunabe.
Q: Is there a role or genre of work you want to try next? A: Moon SungHyun: I've done a bright and comical role once, so I'd like to try something next.
A: If I were to do a role, I would like to play a more intense, really cool character. A very strong role! A: Hyunseok: I've only appeared in school dramas up until now, but now
I think it suits my age and image well. I want to try doing more of that in the future, and when I get a little older, I want to try doing something more intense and evil, like Sunghyun said.
I would like to try various roles, such as playing a role in a drama. Q: Lastly, please give a message to your Japanese fans. A: Moon SungHyun: Japanese fans, please give a message to our Japanese fans.
