Police investigate after man puts foreign object in coffee served to female employee at Seoul cafe (South Korea)
Police have launched an investigation after a man was caught on security camera secretly putting an unknown object into a drink being drunk by a female waitress at a cafe in Seoul.
On the 5th, JTBC's current affairs and educational program "Incident Team Leader" released surveillance camera footage taken at a cafe in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 2nd.
On the afternoon of the 2nd, informant A was working alone at the cafe. When he took another sip of the coffee that was on the table, he noticed an unpleasant fishy smell and decided to drink it again.
A said, "I usually drink iced Americano, but when I sipped it through the straw, it had a bad fishy smell, so I swallowed about half of it and immediately spat it out (the cup).
"When I put it to my nose and smelled it, it smelled strange, something I'd never smelled before," he said. After spitting out the coffee, Mr. A remembered a man who had been acting suspiciously in the store.
At the time, the man was the only customer in the store, and she felt his gaze constantly on her while she was working.
When A checked the security camera in the store, he saw that A, who had received the order, had turned away.
The man was caught putting a foreign object in A's coffee as he was preparing it for him. After putting the foreign object in A's coffee, the man returned to his seat and saw A's coffee.
A also saw him drinking. After checking the security camera footage, A immediately called the police. The man purchased drinks at the cafe using a mobile coupon instead of a credit card.
This is presumably a deliberate and planned act to avoid revealing his identity. The police are tracking the man's movements and obtaining information on the mobile coupons he used.
According to the police, it will take about a month to determine what foreign substance the man put in A's coffee.
Attorney Park Ji Hoon said on the broadcast that day, "This is a case in which charges of property damage and assault may be applied."
