SKT USIM card information leaked... Class action lawsuit begins in South Korea
A class action lawsuit to protect consumer rights has begun in connection with the leak of USIM (Subscriber Identity Module) information of SK Telecom (SKT) customers.
According to the Korean Legal Association on the 28th, the Law Office of Low-Pid has recently been promoting a class action lawsuit to protect the rights of victims of the SKT USIM data leak.
Based on their past experience of winning the "Baby Bath Environmental Hormones Class Action Lawsuit," they plan to hold companies accountable for violating the obligation to protect personal information in this case as well.
"The influx of personal information itself causes great anxiety to consumers, and companies have a legal and social responsibility to safely protect customer information," said Ha Hee-bon, head lawyer at Lawpid Law Firm.
"Based on our experience in winning class action lawsuits in the past, we will do our best to represent the voices of consumers in the SKT case and ensure that substantial compensation is provided to victims," the company said.
Any client who was a member of SKT as of the 18th of this month can participate through the Lawyers' website.
Users are also taking voluntary action. After the SKT hacking incident, the "SKT USIM Hacking Joint Response Official Homepage" was set up.
The portal site also launched a "SKT personal information leak class action lawsuit cafe," which had about 3,000 members in just one day. The site said, "The leaked information is provided through mobile phone number authentication.
"There is a high possibility that this could lead to serious secondary damage in various financial and SNS services, but SKT's response has been far too inadequate," he said.
"SKT confirmed on the night of the 19th that customer USIM-related information had been leaked due to a malicious code attack by hackers," the company said.
The company explained that the leaked information mainly consisted of USIM unique identification numbers and network connection keys, and did not include names, resident registration numbers, payment account numbers, or other information.
The exact extent of the damage, such as how many of the 23 million subscribers' personal information was leaked or what information was leaked, has yet to be confirmed.
An emergency response team has been formed to investigate the extent and route of the leak, and whether there has been any additional damage. SKT will provide free USIM card replacements for all customers from the 28th, and will also provide a USIM protection service.
As of April 28, there have been no official confirmed cases of the leaked information being misused or secondary damage, but the USIM information
Concerns have been raised that the information could be copied and used to commit financial fraud, such as to set up mobile phone accounts or circumvent message authentication procedures.
